Eggs: Wash or Not

The question I seem to see more often than anything else about chickens is: Do you wash your eggs or not? and why? Well the only thing I can say, is this is mostly up to you, but it is not necessary to wash them before storing them. I have found that the U.S. is the only place that even refrigerates eggs. 

 You can place your eggs, unwashed on the counter for longer than they will last in the refrigerator. However, they have to be unwashed. Eggs are laid with a bloom on them that will keep all the bacteria out of them and keeps them longer. Once you wash the eggs, they must go in the refrigerator though. I keep mine on the counter.

There are many different types of egg wash available on the market. I have the wipes because they are very convenient. I will say that if you have to wash them, they have to be cooled. They cannot sit on the counter at this point. If I have a really dirty egg, then I will wash it. Then it goes in the fridge. Most of the time they are on the counter though. There are also washes that you could use in the sink or in a bucket with a rag such as this one, this one, or this one. Any one of these will work. That or just straight water out of the faucet.

What ever you decide, there is no wrong way. Just know that once they are refrigerated, they must always be refrigerated. You cannot go back and forth with this. Also remember that once they are washed, they must be refrigerated. Unless you are working toward NPIP certification, you don't have to wash or refrigerate them.

Organic Certification for Vegetables

One of our goals for the farm is to become organically certified on the garden and the eventually the animals too. However, in doing the research on this, we are not sure we will be able to get certified on the animals. I'm not sure that it will matter or not, because we don't sell our animals for food per say.

 Just to get the garden certified we have to be able to show what has been put into the ground for the past 5 years. The garden area has to be free of prohibited chemicals for 5 years before the certification can even begin. Thankfully, we have been here that long and can show what has been put into the ground for the garden area for the last 5 years.

If you are looking for information on getting certified, the best place to start is with your state. However, Arizona doesn't do anything specific for certification so we only have the federal guidelines to deal with here. All the information you may need can be found here: https://www.usda.gov/media/blog/2012/10/10/organic-101-five-steps-organic-certification  This is only the federal level guidelines though, so check with your state also to see if they have anything extra they require done.

If your state has other requirements you will have to meet them as well so I am thankful that we only have the federal guidelines to deal with. I will try to keep you updated on this process because the way I read everything it will take about a year before we can get the certification. I am hoping it will be a little easier than it seems, because it feels a bit daunting at this point.

Shampoo and Conditioner

I am always on the look out for hair products that don't have all the nasty chemicals in them and this one seems to fit that bill.

These are from Maximilian and they smell amazing! These don't have the parabens, sulphate, silicones, or color. These do have passion fruit, and black seed oil in them. I believe it's the passion fruit that makes them smell so amazing.

After my shower, my hair was easy to comb through with my fingers and it was so soft. I didn't have any tangling that I have gotten with some shampoos and conditioners. I never brush my hair when it is wet and usually by the time it dries, it's a little rough to comb through. This time it was not. It was so easy to brush. I can't remember the last time I was able to say that about a hair product.
